Participating Artists
The Firecracker Press
The Firecracker Press is a letterpress printing and graphic design studio located in South City, St. Louis. He prints posters, and fine art pieces from hand carved wood and linoleum blocks, space-age photo sensitive plastics, and antique lead type.
Kung Fu Chicken
Kung Fu Chicken is an interdisciplinary art studio run by husband and wife Carmelita Nunez and Daniel Shown. All works from J. Marie Textiles are hand made from top to bottom. Each purse, clutch, necktie, and scarf are dyed, sewn, and screened by hand with love in St. Louis, MO. No two are exactly alike, so every creation is an original!
Sweet Chickadee
Laura Leyes Woods of Sweet Chickadee loves to cook. She combines a medley of complex elements that yield satisfyingly simple results. Baked goods are what she relishes most, and she finds an unassuming charm in a slice of banana bread, or in a chocolate chip cookie with a tall glass of milk. It all comes together with creative packaging which makes her tasty treats something you can share with friends or keep all to yourself.
Lull*
Lull* graphic wearables are created using original illustrations, hand screened on sweatshop free apparel. Whether you are buying something off the rack or you are customizing your own shirt or jacket, you are buying quality and originality. Come rock with us, won't you?
Andrew Lewandowski
Andrew Paul Lewandowski, OFM is a member for the Franciscan Province of the Sacred Heart and a Roman Catholic priest. He has worked in parishes in Michigan, Illinois, and Missouri and has taught High School English, Art, and Religion in Chicago and Cleveland. He has a M.Div degree from Catholic Theological Union of Chicago. He is presently chaplain for the Franciscan Sisters of Mary in St. Louis.
Andrew is showing work at John Yimin's Outsider Art Info Gallery. In August, 2004, Andrew joined around twenty other artists from around the world at the London Raw Arts Festival sponsored by artist Pier Midwinter and the Candid Arts Trust. He has been represented by Ghost Dog Gallery and Art Mango Gallery. In March of 2006 he will participate in the International Raw Arts Festival in Prato,Italy. He is a member of the Whohadada Group.
Adria M. Gutierrez
From a young age Adria Gutierrez showed sensitivity and artistic taste in the use of colors and forms. Life made her travel around the world and she settled in Italy for some years. There her contact with Murano glass and contemporary trends of the European art inspired her to create a jewelry line with a modern touch.
Adria's jewelry is art that combines the delicate beauty of the glass with the strength and brilliance of the silver. The artist designs each jewel in a distinct and special way. Through a very detailed process, each glass piece is designed and handcrafted with the right combination of colors and texture. The silver that holds it is created so that it allows the glass to vibrate with colors and clearness. This silver design is elaborated with sterling silver 925 that together with the glass blends in with the personality and dress of the bearer.
Matt Kindt
Kindt is the artist and writer of numerous graphic novels including Eisner & Harvey award nominated works "Pistolwhip" and "2 Sisters". His work includes handmade books, prints and watercolors. He will also ave a bunch of new stuff this time -- new prints, new handmade books and boxes of candy cigarettes with a super secret story inside!
Eric Stevens
Stevens holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts/Graphic Design from Fontbonne University. His woodcuts prints are made in a traditional manner of carving design into woodblocks, inking the surface of the block, and pressing the ink into the paper. The subject matter of his work (vegetables, animals, insects) has been inspired by my time in the garden
Megan Singleton
Singleton utilizes nature as both inspiration and a source for materials in her papermaking and photography. She uses techiques of layering multiple images and textures to create images, then pulling through transparency with the use of light and watermarks. Some works revolve around fictional naratives while others extend from a minimalist approach simply exploring form and texture.
Jacob Hauck
Hauck is a multi-media artist dealing mainly with metal and wood. He was trained as a metalsmith, and these skills show through in most of my work. His work at Independent Art Market will be mostly small (6-12 inches), hammered copper bowls, and some silver jewelry.
John Vogl
Vogel has been "workin for the man", and makes "screenprinted things."
Thomas Crone
Crone is a co-editor of 52nd City. A writer and collegiate educator. He is also an accomplished photographer. In his words, "I take some pictures; mostly of things, sometimes of people." He makes digital photography on found objects/vintage frames.
TeDe
TeDe, meaning literally "by hand" in Japanese, creates unique furniture, objects and textiles. Tetsushi Inoue and Kristina Detwiller formed TeDe in early 2006 after relocating from San Francisco to Japan. Living in the quiet mountains of Handa Kogen, they focus on creating work which echoes the experience of our hands into real products. At this event, Kristina's textiles will be making an appearance, which are silkscreen printed, woven, and/or sewn by hand. Please see www.tede.jp to see some of Tetsushi's works.
Steven J Davis
Davis creates small functional sculptures for those who like to communicate with animals. He has created a mahogany box with copper wings, field quality adjustable shoulder strap and battery operated analog electronics with three adjustable dials. The electrical signal can be manipulated to create "bird" sounds. It also creates many other weird barnyard sounds. This is ideal for hikers and birdwatchers who want to attract the twittering, chirping varieties. Batteries and small bag of bird seed included.
Laura Parks
Parks is trained as a medical doctor, but also holds a Bachelor's degree in French Literature. Her microscopic photography feautures amniotic fluid in its crystalline state. The pattern is refered to as "Ferning" because it resembles Palm Fronds. These photos were taken into photoshop and put through color filters for more dramatic contrast.
Hilary Hitchcock
Hitchcock is fascinated by things that are vanishing. With her camera, she tries to capture the point where past regularities begin to disappear from daily sight. She is especially fond of documenting the design sensibility of days gone by and is enamored of rural Midwestern landscapes.
With a photographer for a grandfather and a painter for a grandmother, she has been surrounded by rich visual imagery for most of her life. It was only a few years ago, however, when she purchased her first digital camera, that she began to take a serious interest in the art of photography.
Recently she has broadened her interest in photography beyond digital and has been shooting Polaroids and medium format film with toy cameras.
Brian Novak
Novak holds a B.F.A from University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. He describes his paintings as "Abstract, whimsical".
Josh Crow
Crow's current painted images vary from desolate suburban environs to spaces occupied by supermodels and woodland creatures. His medium is oil on canvas and panel.
Dana Smith
Smith is a self-taught painter working in acrylic and marker. he was born in 1974 in Cape Girardeau, MO. He started drawing at age 10 by copying Mad Magazine cartoons. He started painting in 1993 after taking numerous trips out to California and hanging out with other artists. From 1994-1996 he spent most of my time traveling back and forth from Missouri to California, drawing and painting as much as he could. In 1996 he spent 4 months in Auckland, NZ and brought back 30 completed canvases. From 1996-1997 he lived in northern California about 30 miles west of San Francisco where he continued to paint as much as possible. Late in 1997 he moved to St. Louis. His current work deals mainly with artists/musicians/venues in the St. Louis area, documenting the invisible but thriving underground scene. He is continuing his theme of artists and venues but he is also stretching out to include other business like The Buttery, Courtesy, and Dunaway Books - generally places he enjoys going to and hanging out.
Marie Oberkirsch
Oberkirsch creates original screenprints using paper stencils to apply dye on canvas. All items are hand sewn, original patterns! She received her BFA from the University of Kansas, and her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Currently, she is an Adjunct Instructor at Maryville University and St. Charles Community College
